Keeping fish aquariums clean 4 -12 - 26
Keeping aquariums clean isn't hard work but long work in getting all the
over population of snails that eat any & everything in the aquarium including
your plants (YES THEY DO & WILL DESTROY ALL your plant's) so the
best & ONLY way to get rid of them is do a FULL clean out, take everything
out & bleach everything OTHER than the live plant's, rocks, gravel, ornaments
even the filter canister, or any type of filter system your running in the tank.
Once you have everything sitting in a tub of 50/50 bleach water soaking
don't drain the tank till you put a full cup of bleach (while the filter
system is still running) this kills all the eggs & snails right in their
tracks for good, including any driftwood that was in the aquarium.
let the aquarium run for 6 hrs. & everything that is sitting in the bleach
as well this will kill any & all snails & all the eggs they have on all
that was in the tank, hoses, tubes, all through the whole aquarium, as
for the plants, well about the only thing to do is do a internet search.

But the way I have been doing it is a FULL aquarium clean out
Once a year, just after winter is over (April-after Easter) I set up
a outside tank for all the fish to go into for the season & do a all out
aquarium take down, Just as I explained at the start of this blog.
Once I get everything out of the tank, everything but the water &
gravel & filter system, that's when I start with dealing with the
snails, I leave the filter system running & put a full cup of bleach
in the tank & let it run for like 6 hrs. that will kill every snail &
all the eggs that is in the aquarium, then I start breaking the
whole aquarium down for a full clean out, top to bottom end to end.
I also use peroxide to clean what plant's I keep to put back in
the aquarium, I use a spray bottle to spray the plants down &
let them sit for a few minutes (5 mins) then rinse them down.
I do this with my 75 gal & my 30 gal, I do my 75 gal 1st cause it has
the most fish in it & takes the longest time to get it broke down &
ready to set back up again, the 30 gal doesn't take as much time to get
broke down & do the full clean out to set back up.
The 30 gal is just a holding tank for new fish or plant's I buy, I keep it
clean & ready at all times, so I KNOW there's nothing in it that will get
transferred into the 75 gal, I clean it after every use.
So if you ever run into a situation where your aquarium is over ran
with snails think about what is the best way to tackle the situation B-4
You do anything to it, way your options do your research & yourself
as well as your fish a favor.
